Foraging Connections

The Sustainable Food Movement in Santa Monica, and how we can make it happen.

Sustainable Food

How we spend our food dollars, as individuals, businesses, and as a city, can improve the quality of life in our community, and the communities where our food comes from. By making sustainable food choices we can ensure a cleaner environment, fight climate change, boost the local economy, and support social justice.

The City of Santa Monica is committed to supporting sustainable, local, and organic food through its own purchasing, and by helping to make sustainable food more accessible to its residents. As a sign of this commitment Santa Monica was the first city to sign on to the Cool Foods Pledge, and had elevated food sustainability as a priority focus within the Sustainable City Plan.

Santa Monica's Sustainable Food Commitment:
1.Eat organic; 2. Reduce conventional meat and dairy consumption; 3. Avoid processed foods; 4. Eat locally grown; 5. Reduce packaging and recycle food waste.

Meatless Mondays

The City of Santa Monica has joined the Meatless Monday campaign, a non-profit initiative of The Monday Campaigns. In honor of the campaign we offer you our Community Meatless Monday Recipe Book so you can start each week with healthy, environmentally friendly meat-free alternatives. Our goal is to help you reduce your meat consumption by 15% in order to improve your personal health and the health of the planet.

Eating Well

The City of Santa Monica has partnered with the Eat Well Guide®, a free online directory for anyone in search of fresh, locally grown and sustainably produced food in the United States and Canada.  The collaboration seeks to connect consumers that want to eat healthy, sustainable food with those food vendors that provide it.

So go to eatwellguide.org or eatwellguide.org/mobile and begin eating well.  It’s never been easier!
